Smart Film for Sliding Glass Doors in South Florida: Cost, Wiring and What Works
Sliding glass doors are the most common smart film job we do in South Florida homes, because they are the biggest glass in the house and the one the neighbors, the pool deck or the street look straight through at night. Smart film goes on the interior face of each panel, the fixed panel is wired through the frame, and the sliding panel is wired with a flexible low-voltage lead or a concealed contact so the door still slides normally. A standard two-panel slider (50 to 60 square feet) costs $2,500 to $5,400 installed at our $55 to $90 per square foot range; three-panel doors run $4,400 to $8,100 and four-panel or pocket sliders $5,500 to $10,800.
The two questions everyone asks first
Does the sliding panel still slide? Yes. The film is bonded to the glass and moves with it; the only thing that has to cross the moving joint is a thin low-voltage lead, which we route through a flexible loop inside the frame channel, the same way alarm contacts and motorized-shade cables are handled. Nothing drags, nothing is visible, and the door locks as before. Can you do it on impact sliders? Usually, yes — on the interior face, after we check the exposure and any factory low-E coating. What it costs by configuration
Two-panel slider, 50 to 60 sq ft: $2,500 to $5,400. Three-panel, 80 to 90 sq ft: $4,400 to $8,100. Four-panel or pocket slider, 100 to 120 sq ft: $5,500 to $10,800. Corner sliders and floor-to-ceiling glass walls are quoted on measurement. Every price includes film, the transformer, a wall switch or remote, wiring, edge sealing and a two-year warranty on film, transformer and labor. Adding app or voice control is a small line item, not a new project.
Where the transformer and switch go
The transformer is about the size of a paperback and plugs into a standard outlet. On a slider it usually lives behind a nearby cabinet, in an adjacent closet or above a soffit; the switch goes by the door or on the existing light-switch plate so the room reads as one system. In condos nothing penetrates the exterior wall or the slab, which is what keeps the job inside your unit and off the association’s exterior-alteration list.
Frosted at night, clear by day — how people actually use it
Most clients frost the slider from dusk until morning and leave it clear during the day; a smart switch or the app does it on a schedule, and Alexa or Google Home works if you want it by voice. The film uses power only while clear, roughly the draw of a small LED bulb for a two-panel door, so the electric-bill impact is under a couple of dollars a month.
Things we check before quoting
Glass type and coating, frame material and the depth of the channel for the wire loop, whether the panel is on the interior or exterior track, sun exposure, and where the nearest outlet is. That is all done in a free on-site measurement, and the price is fixed in writing before any work starts.
