12 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Smart Film Installer in Miami
Switchable smart film is an electrical product bonded to glass. The film brand matters less than the person installing it: edge sealing, wiring, transformer placement and surface prep decide whether it looks flawless in five years or peels in one. These are the questions we'd want a customer to ask us — and our answers. Bring them to any installer you talk to.
1. Is the film rated for wet areas like showers?
Ours is, and how it's installed matters more than the rating. On a shower enclosure we apply the film to the dry side of the glass — the face outside the enclosure — never in the spray line, and every edge is sealed. Bathroom windows are treated the same way. Ask any installer to show you a shower they finished at least a year ago.
2. Which side of the glass does the film go on?
The interior, protected side. For a shower that's the outside face of the enclosure; for a window it's the room side; for an office partition it's whichever side is away from foot traffic and cleaning crews. The film should never be the surface that gets scrubbed.
3. How are the edges sealed?
With a clear edge sealant applied after the film is squeegeed and the busbar is connected. In South Florida humidity this is the step that matters most — an unsealed edge lets moisture into the liquid-crystal layer and the film clouds from the border inward. We seal every edge on every panel, and we warranty the seal.
4. Where does the transformer go?
PDLC smart film runs on low voltage — typically 48 to 65 volts AC — supplied by a transformer that plugs into a standard 110V outlet. We place the transformer where you'll never see it: a vanity cabinet, a closet, above a drop ceiling or behind a panel. We tell you the location before installation and label it.
5. What happens if water gets behind the film?
If the edges are sealed correctly, it can't. If a seal is damaged — a cracked panel, aggressive cleaning with a blade — the affected area turns hazy and the panel needs replacing. That's why the seal and the warranty on it matter. Our 2-year warranty covers the film, the installation and the edge seal.
6. Does the warranty cover the film, the transformer and the installation?
Ours covers all three for two years: film, transformer and controller, and installation labor. Ask to see the warranty in writing before you sign. If an installer only warranties the film, the labor to replace a failed panel is on you.
7. Can you show me a completed shower installation, not just office glass?
Yes — we have hundreds. Bathroom and shower glass is our most common residential job in Miami, and our gallery and Instagram are full of them. An installer who only shows conference rooms may not have solved the moisture problem yet.
8. What is the privacy state during a power outage?
Frosted. PDLC film is opaque when unpowered and clear when powered, so a power cut leaves your bathroom or bedroom private, not exposed. Some customers ask for the reverse; that requires a different film type and we'll tell you honestly what the trade-offs are.
9. What is the expected lifespan and switching-cycle rating?
Quality PDLC film is rated in the tens of thousands of on/off cycles and, installed indoors with sealed edges, performs for well over a decade. Cheaper films yellow, delaminate or develop dead spots in two to three years. Ask what film brand is being used and whether the installer has panels in the field older than five years. We do.
10. Will the wiring and busbars be visible?
They shouldn't be. The busbar runs along one edge of the film and the lead wire exits at a corner; we route it inside the frame, along a mullion or behind trim so nothing is visible on the glass. On frameless shower panels we plan the exit point with you before we cut the film.
11. How will I control it?
Your choice: an RF remote, a wall switch at the door, a smartphone app, voice through Alexa or Google Home, or full integration with Control4, Crestron or Lutron for offices and larger homes. We wire for the control you choose and can add another later.
12. Do you pull permits, and are you licensed and insured?
Smart film on existing glass with a plug-in transformer is a low-voltage installation and does not normally require a permit in Miami-Dade or Broward; hard-wired switch installations or building-automation tie-ins may. We are licensed and insured in Florida, and we'll tell you before the job if your project needs an electrician's sign-off.
