Smart film for windows is a switchable PDLC film bonded to the room-side face of the glass you already have. It is not a new window, not a replacement pane, and not a permanent frosted coating. The PDLC smart film for windows goes on as a self-adhesive layer, and once it is wired to a small transformer, that pane of glass can switch between clear and frosted on command. Because it is applied to existing glass, your impact windows, frames and exterior stay exactly as they are.
How it works
The film contains microscopic liquid-crystal droplets suspended in a polymer layer. When a low voltage is applied, the droplets align and light passes straight through, so the glass looks clear. When the power is off, the droplets sit at random angles and scatter the light, so the glass turns an even, milky white frost. The switch happens in about a second in either direction. Clear is the powered state; frosted is the natural, unpowered state, which means a power cut leaves the glass private, not exposed.
How you control it
A normal wall switch by the door is the most common choice and is what comes with a standard installation. You can also use a handheld remote, which suits bathrooms and bedrooms where cutting a switch into tile is not worth it. If you already run Alexa, Google Home or Apple Home, a smart switch or relay makes the film a normal device in that system, with voice commands, schedules and scenes. Occupancy sensors and sunset timers are available for exam rooms and offices where staff should not have to remember the switch.

What installation on existing windows involves
Every job starts with a free site visit: we identify the glass type, measure each pane, and agree where the zones, switches and transformer will go. On install day the glass is cleaned to installation standard, the film is cut to each pane, applied and positioned with a slip solution, squeegeed flat, and the edges are sealed and trimmed. The low-voltage wiring is run concealed inside the frame or wall, the transformer and controller are connected, and every panel is tested with you watching. A typical room is a same-day job; larger homes and offices are scheduled over more days, usually after hours.
Power and wiring
Smart film for windows does need a low-voltage electrical connection to switch. It is not a peel-and-stick product that works on its own. A small transformer converts household mains to the 48 to 65 volts the film uses, and we conceal the cabling inside the frame channel, mullion or wall so nothing shows on the glass. The transformer plugs into a standard outlet and can sit in a cabinet, closet or above a soffit; nothing penetrates the exterior wall. Power draw is small, about 0.3 to 0.5 watts per square foot only while the film is clear, and nothing while frosted.
Lifespan and maintenance
Clean smart film for windows the way you would clean ordinary glass: a soft cloth and a mild, non-abrasive, ammonia-free cleaner. No scrubbing pads, no razor blades, no ammonia-heavy scouring products, and nothing abrasive on the sealed edges. In a shower, squeegee the glass after use and keep the bottom edge dry. With that routine the film keeps its clarity and switching performance for many years. Manufacturers rate PDLC film in the tens of thousands of on/off cycles.

How it differs from the other films we fit
Smart film for windows is the switchable, electrical product. We also install two other kinds of film on the same glass: solar-control window film, which cuts heat, glare and UV but does not switch, and frosted or privacy tint film, which gives permanent privacy at a lower cost but takes the view away for good.
