Smart Film: How It Works, What It Costs and Where It Works

Smart film — also called PDLC film or switchable privacy film — is a thin, self-adhesive polyester layer bonded to the room-side face of existing glass. Inside the film are microscopic liquid-crystal droplets suspended in a polymer matrix. When a low-voltage current runs through the film the droplets align and light passes straight through, so the glass is clear. Cut the power and the droplets scatter randomly, diffusing light so the glass turns frosted and private. There are no motors, no blinds and no moving parts; the change happens at a molecular level in a fraction of a second.

The important practical point is that smart film is a retrofit product. It goes onto the glass you already own — windows, shower enclosures, sliding doors, office partitions, storefronts — with an adhesive backing. No pane is removed and no glazier is needed.

Installed in South Florida, switchable smart film runs $55 to $90 per square foot, depending on film grade, job size and complexity. A frameless shower enclosure of 30 to 40 square feet is typically $1,700 to $3,600 installed. A two-panel sliding glass door of 45 to 60 square feet runs $2,500 to $5,400. An office or conference-room partition of 120 to 200 square feet runs $6,600 to $18,000. Running cost is negligible: the film draws about 0.5 watts per square foot, and only while it is clear. A bathroom panel costs a few dollars a year to run, less than a single LED bulb.

The most common residential request is bathroom and shower glass — frosted when you need it, clear when you want the light back — followed by glass front doors and sidelights, bedroom windows, pool-facing sliders and home-office partitions. On the commercial side the work is conference rooms and private offices that need instant meeting privacy, medical and dental exam rooms, hotel guest bathrooms and spa partitions, and retail storefronts that want after-hours privacy without bars or grilles.

In condos and high-rises the install is interior-surface only, so nothing changes on the building exterior and the impact glass is left alone. Most associations approve it because it is treated as an interior finish; we supply the certificate of insurance and a one-page scope the board can sign off quickly.

Smart film can be applied to almost any smooth, flat glass surface: standard annealed glass, tempered glass, double-pane IGUs, interior partitions, glass doors and sliders. It goes on the interior face, so the exterior of the building is untouched.

On Florida impact glass the film is applied to the room-side surface, which leaves the impact-rated laminate untouched and the window's storm rating unaffected. The one thing we check first is thermal load — how much heat a sun-facing pane already absorbs — because adding any film to hot laminated glass can raise the risk of thermal stress. If a pane is a poor candidate we tell you before quoting.

Installation is clean and fast. We measure and assess the glass, clean it to installation standard, cut the film to each pane and apply it to the interior face, seal the edges against South Florida humidity, run the low-voltage wiring to a concealed transformer, connect the controller, and test every panel with you. A single window or shower takes a few hours; a whole bathroom or a set of sliders is usually one day; offices with several conference rooms are scheduled after hours over one or two evenings.

Control is your choice: a wall switch (the most common, and the one we recommend for rentals and second homes), a handheld RF remote, a smartphone app, a smart-home integration with Alexa or Google, an occupancy sensor, or a sunset timer. The transformer steps household mains down to the low AC voltage the film needs, and the cabling is concealed inside the frame, channel or wall.

A quality PDLC film on interior or protected glass with sealed edges performs for well over ten years. The film is rated in the tens of thousands of switching cycles — far more than a bathroom or conference room uses in a decade. When smart film fails early it is almost never the film: it is moisture at an unsealed edge, a transformer placed somewhere hot and damp, film on the wet side of the glass, or direct exterior sun on unprotected glass.

Day to day, clean it like ordinary glass with a soft microfiber cloth and a mild, ammonia-free glass cleaner. No abrasive pads, no razors, nothing that scratches the edges. Because there are no cords or strings it is safer around children and pets than blinds, and because it is a smooth surface it does not collect dust, dander or salt air the way curtains do. Every installation carries our 2-year warranty on film, transformer and workmanship.

Smart film is not the only way to get privacy on glass, and it is not always the right one. Laminated smart glass gives the same switch but costs several times more and requires replacing the pane. Frosted film is cheaper and always private, but you lose the view permanently. Reflective mirror film gives daytime privacy only and reverses at night when the inside is brighter. Blinds and curtains are cheapest but block the light, collect dust and salt air, and are often impractical on a frameless shower or a floor-to-ceiling slider. Window tint rejects solar heat and glare — a job smart film does not do — and the two films can go on the same pane.
