What Happens on Smart Film Installation Day: A Step-by-Step Walkthrough
A typical residential smart film installation takes two to four hours for a bathroom or a single sliding door and one working day for an office or a multi-panel glass wall. The crew arrives with the film already cut to your measurements, cleans and preps the glass, applies the film to the interior face, seals the edges, runs the low-voltage wiring to the transformer, mounts the switch or pairs the remote, and tests the switch in front of you before leaving. You can use the glass the same day; we ask you to keep water and cleaners off the edges for 48 hours.
Before we arrive
Everything starts with the free on-site measurement, where we measure every pane to the millimeter, check the glass type and any coatings, find the nearest outlet and decide where the transformer and switch will live. The film is cut to those measurements in advance, so on install day there is no cutting on your glass. We confirm the price in writing beforehand and, for condos, send the association the one-page scope and insurance certificate.
Step 1 — Glass prep (30 to 45 minutes)
Smart film only bonds well to perfectly clean glass. We protect the floor and nearby surfaces, then wash the glass with a neutral cleaner, scrape any residue, and do a final pass with a lint-free wipe. In a shower we also dry the frame channels, because a wet edge is the most common reason a film lifts later.
Step 2 — Applying the film (30 to 90 minutes per panel)
The film goes on the interior face of the glass using a slip solution, the same principle as high-end window tint but with a thicker, stiffer laminate. Two technicians position it, squeegee it from the center outward to push out the solution and any air, and trim the edge to a hairline gap from the frame. Larger panels take longer because the film has to be handled flat and aligned in one go.
Step 3 — Edge sealing and wiring (30 to 60 minutes)
The busbars along the film edge are connected to a thin, flat low-voltage lead, which we route inside the frame channel or along a hidden edge to the transformer. Edges are sealed so moisture cannot creep under the film. The transformer plugs into a standard outlet and can sit in a cabinet, a closet or above a soffit; nothing penetrates the exterior wall or slab. On a sliding door, the moving panel gets a flexible loop so the door slides normally.
Step 4 — Controls and the first switch test
We mount the wall switch or pair the remote, app, or Alexa and Google Home if you chose those, then switch the film clear and frosted with you watching. The film goes from clear to an even white frost in well under a second and fails to frosted if power is cut, which is what you want for a bathroom. After we leave
Keep water, steam and cleaning products off the film edges for 48 hours while the adhesive fully cures. After that, clean it like glass with a soft cloth and a mild, ammonia-free cleaner. Your two-year warranty on film, transformer and labor starts on install day, and if anything looks off in the first weeks, one call brings the crew back.
How long each project takes
Single bathroom window or shower: two to four hours. Two-panel sliding door: half a day. Office door and sidelight: half a day.
